The new access routes from Avenue Pompidou to the 6 station platforms will relieve congestion in the main station hall by roughly 20% and will enable renovation of the underground passageway so that it may be used by bikes and pedestrians.
The multimodal interchange opens to the south via a new pedestrian shopping mall and it provides an additional route onto the platforms from Avenue Pompidou, with stairs, escalators and lifts making it accessible to the disabled. In addition to relieving congestion in the railway station, this new entrance links to south Part-Dieu (Buire and Mouton Duvernet areas) where housing, facilities and offices are being developed. It also provides a quick and convenient way for pedestrians to cross under the railway. Two traffic lanes will be maintained on Avenue George Pompidou and the cycle lanes will be renovated.
